Top 100 ten-year winning streak for BDC

Business Development Bank of Canada gets recognised as one of the top 100 employers in Canada for the tenth year in a row.

Mediacorp Canada, a publisher focused on employment-related periodicals, has named government-owned Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) one of the top 100 employers in Canada for 2016.

This marks the tenth year in a row that BDC has won this award. Mediacorp does not rank the top 100 companies but noted BDC's financial benefits and compensation, training and skills development and community involvement, awarding the bank A ratings in all these categories.

BDC secured B+ ratings for its physical workplace, work atmosphere and communications, health and family-friendly benefits, vacation and personal time off and employee engagement and performance.

Mediacorp particularly underlined BDC's maternity perks, its encouragement of head office employees to cycle to work and its three-week annual vacation time with the option to buy more as significant factors in its rating and award.

The annual competition, dubbed Canada’s Top 100 Employers, was first organised in 1999. Mediacorp looks at the recruitment details of more than 85,000 employers before narrowing them down to a shortlist of some 8,000 businesses.

Mary Karamanos, senior vice-president of human resources at BDC, said: “We are proud to be recognised for our efforts to make BDC a great place to work. A supportive and inspiring workplace gives our people the tools to better support our entrepreneur clients and stay ahead of best practices and trends.”

Richard Yerema, managing editor of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, said: “For employers like BDC the ability to receive such recognition year-over-year is very much a recognition of an ability and desire to evolve and keep pace with the ever-changing aspects of human resource management and, more generally, changing societal expectations about the nature of work for current and future generations.”
